Services this Saturday for Helen Ballard, 92

GRAPEVINE - Helen Farris Ballard, 92, died Aug. 27, 2014, at Kindred Rehabilitation in Grapevine after a short illness. She was born July 23, 1922, in Colorado City, the daughter of Charles Richard Farris and Wenona Daugherty Farris. Growing up, she and her sister Hazel worked in their father's drug store as "soda fountain jerks". She attended business college in San Antonio after graduating from high school and found work in Odessa writing advertising for a radio station. In 1946, she married Burl Timothy Ballard after his return from Europe in World War II. He, too was from Colorado City and they had known each other all through school. A year later they were the parents of twins Charles and Linda. He worked in the oil industry, owning a well servicing company. She never worked out of the home until her children were in college. Mrs. Ballard was an avid reader, gardener and seamstress. She loved bird and wildlife watching from her porch in Fort Davis. In later years she became a talented beader, creating beautiful jewelry and ornaments out of seed beads. She also enjoyed sending cards to anyone she felt needed a few caring words. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis and could be counted on to take food to anyone in need. She is survived by son Charles Ballard and wife Teresa of Fort Stockton, her daughter Linda Ballard Allen and husband Lawson of Fort Davis, granddaughter Amy Allen Parker and husband Tim and their four children Elizabeth, Will, and twins Kate and Emily of Colleyville, granddaughter Holly Allen Psifidis and husband George and their three children Evy, Chloe and Nicholas of Houston; a niece, Jeanie Godwin of Tiller, OR and sister-in-law Codie Ballard Allen and husband, R.V. (Hoss) of Abilene and their family. She is preceded in death by husband, Burl; their infant child Timothy; her parents, and sister, Hazel Godwin. There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davisat 1:30 pm, Sep. 6, with a reception to follow.
