The Beta Iota Chapter

The Beta Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society international for key women educators will have its monthly meeting this Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Alpine at 10:30 a.m. Members are reminded to bring materials gathered for the service project to support local educators. Tom Lea Month kicks off at museum with lecture Oct. 17 on Apache Gold

BIG BEND - The Museum of the Big Bend will celebrate Tom Lea Month with a lecture by author and PhD candidate Brandon D. Shuler Oct. 17 at Sul Ross State University. Shuler will present "There's Indians in Them There Hills: A Narrative in Illustrating Apache Gold and Yaqui Silver." at 7 p.m. at the Museum. Visitors may meet the author from 6-6:45 p.m. Shuler will have copies of his books available for purchase and signing following the lecture. There is no admission charge; the public is invited.

Far Marfa opens at Rangra Theatres Friday

ALPINE - Far Marfa, the critically acclaimed, award-winning independent film by Cory Van Dyke of Marfa, will make its West Texas theatrical debut at Rangra Theatres in Alpine this Friday Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. The film, with dozens of Big Bend locals in supporting roles, follows a stalled musician's rarefied and unpredictable quest to reclaim his art, both figuratively and literally, while weaving through the many sides of Marfa and the landscapes of West Texas. The lead role is played by Johnny Sneed, as Carter Frazier, who like in no country song ever written, manages to lose his girlfriend, his pride, and a priceless piece of art all within the span of a day.

Lobos in the Jungle is SR homecoming theme

BIG BEND - With the theme, "Lobos in the Jungle" Sul Ross State University students, staff, faculty and friends will celebrate Homecoming 2013, Oct. 7-Oct.12. A full week of activities are planned, including daily student events, an American Southwest Conference football game, crowning the new Queen and King and honoring Distinguished Alumni and Hall of Honor inductees. As of Sept. 23, 13 candidates, seven women and six men - seek the 2013 Homecoming Queen and King crowns. Coronation will be at halftime of the Lobo-Mississippi College football game Oct. 12.

Artifacts uncovered by Fort Davis couple going back to Mexico

BIG BEND - Mexican artifacts and analysis records discovered by a Fort Davis team of archaeologists, both now deceased, that have been in the possession of the Center for Big Bend Studies of Sul Ross State University were recently repatriated. Mexican authorities from the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia/National Institute of Anthropology and History and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs came to Alpine Sep. 11-13. They inventoried, repackaged (as needed), and loaded the artifacts for transport back to Mexico. The collection was extensive, filling half of a 10 x 10 x 10-foot storage unit in Alpine.

Jazlyn Marie Alvarado

JONESBORO, LA - Jazlyn Marie Alvarado was born at 6:13 p.m., Sep. 16, 2013, in a Jonesboro, La., hospital, the first child of Jacob Alvarado and Jessica Quiroz, formerly of Fort Davis. Grandparents are Susan Alvarado and Jimmy Garcia of Fort Davis. she weighed seven pounds, seven ounces and was 23 inches long.

Church hosts house warming, chili cook-off

FORT DAVIS - Church in the Mountains is hosting a House Warming at the newly completed parsonage on Saturday, Sep. 28 between 4 -7 pm. The community is invited to come and share in the excitement of the event by participating in a Chili Cook Off and dinner free to the public.

FORT DAVIS - The hunt has begun for a replacement on the school board in Fort Davis. Marc Wetzel, who had served several years on the board, resigned this year to return to Sul Ross State University to work on an advanced degree.
