Chambers, McIvor, Garnsey crowned state champs May 14 in tennis, track

AUSTIN and COLLEGE STATION - May 14 was a historic day for  eff Davis County - three high school athletes from some of the smallest and  ost remote schools in the state were crowned state champions. In College Station, at the Class A state tennis tournament, senior Madisen Chambers and sophomore Hadley McIvor teamed to win the state girls doubles crown, while over in Austin, Valentine senior was busy setting a state record in winning the Class A high jump title - the first -ever victory for a Valentine Pirate at any state athletic event

Calderon retiring after quarter of a century

VALENTINE - After over a quarter century teaching, coaching and doing just about any job that was needed, Valentine High School science teacher and former coach Jesus (Chuy) Calderon is retiring.  or 26 years Calderon has served the school district. At the beginning of his career in education, he left for eight years to go into business for himself, running Valentine Grocery for two decades and teaching parttime, starting back in 1997 at Valentine High School. Fire department benefit Saturday in the Resort

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - There will be an Arts and Crafts Benefit this Saturday, May 23 from 10 - 6 pm at the  avis Mountains Resort CommunityCenter at 101 Yellow Knife Trail.  arbecue will be served at 5 pm by B & L BBQ. Contact Bill or Peggy Flanders at 426-3755 to donate crafts to be sold or need more information. All proceeds go to the DMR VFD.

Court takes no action on resolution opposing the Trans Pecos pipeline

The natural gas pipeline proposed for Far West Texas finally came to Jeff Davis County this week - in the form of a anti-pipeline resolution that didn't get to first base with county commissioners. Mainly because that 143-mile pipeline, proposed to go through Pecos, Brewster and Presidio counties, commissioners took no action on a request by Jeff Davis County resident John Luedecke to pass a resolution against the line.

Teda Neill's services here on Saturday

Teda Neill, the co-founder of Albergue Casa Hogar in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico and the longtime Fort Davis womans who invited folks into her Fort Davis home and dollhouse museum for many years, died May 12, 2015, in Carlsbad, NM. She was 102. Graveside services are 3 pm, May 16 in Hillcrest Cemetery in Fort Davis with the Rev. Matt Miles of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis officiating.

New administrator named at hospital effective last week

Big Bend Regional Medical Center has appointed John Hughson as Chief Executive Officer effective May 6. Hughson has more than 10 years of hospital administration experience. For nearly five years, he served as administrator at Burleson St. Joseph Health Center, a 25-bed hospital in Caldwell.

Elementary School

Between state-mandated testing and all the other activities at the end of the school year, Dirks- Anderson Elementary School fifth graders in Fort Davis took a little time off and enjoyed some fresh air and exercise at Fort Davis National Historic Site. The students went on a hike, had a picnic and played historic games.

Cinco de Mayo/Mother's Day dance Saturday; Fort Davis Ballet Folklorico performs, too

The first 50 moms who come through the door for Saturday night's Cinco de Mayo/Mother's Day dance in Fort Davis will receive a beautiful long stem rose. The Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce wraps up a two-weekend celebration of Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day with Saturday's activities starting at 8 pm. The award-winning Fort Davis High School Ballet Folklorico will perform at about 8:30 pm followed by the Grupo de la Paz starring the artist formerly known as Father Rick. The dance will go until about 1 am. Cost is $10 per person or $15 per couple.

The mountains

These guys usually hang out high up in the mountains, preferring the steepest of the rocks, but last Thursday about 60 head of all sizes were down near the highway to Balmorhea, making use of the mineral blocks the ranch has out for cattle and horses.

Jean and Tommy Everett

Jean and Tommy Everett were honored Monday night at the Fort Davis schools banquet for their volunteer efforts with a number of school programs - from coaching the district championship tennis program to cooking the prime rib for the banquet.
