Heiner from Fort Davis

John Morelock and John Heiner from Fort Davis National Historic Site joined parks all across the nation April 9 to celebrate Bells Across the Land in remembrance of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the end of the Civil War at Appomattox Courthouse by Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. This bell is in the bell tower of the Jeff Davis County Courthouse - and it rang for four minutes April 9 starting at 4:15 pm - each minute in memory of each of the four years of the Civil War. by Max Kandler

Free prenatal class offered at hospital

BIG BEND - Drs. John Ray, Raphael Escovar and Ekta Escovar will be conducting a free Prenatal Class on Saturday, April 25 from 10 am – 4 pm. Topics covered will be Labor, Delivery, Breastfeeding and Newborn Care as well as a tour of the Labor and Delivery Department at Big Bend Regional Medical Centerand lunch will be provided

Accused murderer back in Jeff Davis with $2 mil bond

Harlin Pierce, the 18-year-old who is charged  with shooting hid dad here March 19, got back to Jeff Davis County Tuesday evening. Extradicted from Virginia, Pierce was greeted here with an amended complaint charging him with capital murder and a $2 million bond.

Longterm drought forces movement of mule deer in Brewster County sites

BIG BEND - In an effort to boost a struggling mule deer population that lost ground due to longterm drought, 40 mule deer does were relocated from Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area to the Black Gap wildlife area in early February.

A mechanic with a nose

A mechanic with a nose for finding those trouble spots - "perhaps it's this load of  dope inside this phony engine compartment" the Border Patrol drug dog informed the car's owner at the Marfa checkpoint south of town this past week. The guy took a raincheck on repairs and went straight to jail, instead.

Accused shooter turns himself in to Virginia lawmen

FORT DAVIS - The 18-year-old accused of shooting his father as he slept March 19 was expected to waive extradition Wednesday and could be back in Jeff Davis County by next week. District Attorney Rod Ponton said Harlin Pierce was not expected to fight extradition back to Texas as a hearing Apr. 1 in Prince William County, Virginia.

Year's first wildfire burns 800 to 1000 acres in mountains

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - A fire of as-yet-undetermined origin burned 800 to 1000 acres in rough country between Fort Davis and Marfa this weekend. Jeff Davis County Fire Marshal Roy Hurley said the fire burned on the Ponder Ranch and the Poor Farm in country that is east of the Divide between Fort Davis and Marfa.

Woman and her children were not injured

A Jeff Davis County woman and her children were not injured last Wednesday night when the driver failed to negotiate the curve between Fort Davis State Bank and the Jeff Davis County Courthouse, the new car ending up on the courthouse lawn after going through the fence.
