Early voting ends; polls open Tuesday for runoff elections

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - Early voting in the May 27 election ends Friday in Jeff Davis County and across Texas. Early voting will be today and tomorrow at the county's District and County Clerk's offices. On Tuesday, voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kokernot Law Enforcement Building for Voting Precincts 1, 2 and 3, in the Valentine Community Building for Prec. 4 and at the Davis Mountains Resort Baptist Church for Voting Prec. 5. Both Republicans and Democrats vote in the same locations.

School board begins plans for fall election on deficit reduction

FORT DAVIS - With the demise of a number of programs in Fort Davis schools and the loss of numerous teachers - and their families - following the failed school taxing election last November, trustees here began work Monday to take another run this fall at district voters. The loss of the tax election was by the slimmest of margins - just one vote before ballots were tallied a second time and the final loss was by two votes with almost 400 cast.

Booming oilfield making problems for dark skies of Far West Texas

MIDLAND - A West Texas astronomical observatory known for discovering the largest supermassive black hole is facing the threat of growing cities and increased oil and gas play lighting up the horizon. McDonald Observatory celebrates 75 years of research and public outreach this year with a $30 million upgrade to its Hobby-Eberly Telescope.

Wreck on the loop kills Austin man, 62, Saturday afternoon

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - An Austin man, traveling on motorcycles with his son-in-law, was pronounced dead at about 2:30 p.m., May 3 when he missed a steep curve on the Scenic Loop. The 62-year-old Austin man, Jack Stell, was dead at the scene. Peace Justice Fred Granado pronounced Stell dead.

Final Indian band concert at 7 tonight at high school

FORT DAVIS - At least for the forseeable future, tonight's spring Fort Davis band concert will be the last. But both school board trustees and administrators are quick to add that while the music may die tonight - the silence is only temporary. The Indian band program, revived back in the 1980s after years of dormancy, is one of the programs that got the budget ax this spring.

The slab was poured last week for the new addition to the Fort Davis firehall. Walls should be going up soon for the new kitchen area on the west side of the building.

LEVELLAND - A dozen Fort Davis High School students will be in Levelland this week for the Region I UIL Academic Meet. The 12 were winners at the district level and advanced as regional qualifiers.

Greathouse, Pittmans named volunteers of the year by county's Food Pantry

FORT DAVIS – This year’s individual Volunteer of the Year award at the Jeff Davis County Food Pantry goes to Dr. Janet Greathouse of Fort Davis. Besides working fulltime as a Jeff Davis County veterinarian, she offers help to neighbors who need supplemental food for their families. On Saturdays she can be seen helping residents with their grocery selections.
