Immigration bill seen as solution to myriad of problems on border

WEST TEXAS and WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Pete P. Gallego of Alpine is a major sponsor of what many consider an important, bipartisan and comprehensive immigration reform bill which is being taken to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for a vote. Titled HR 15, the common sense bill would solve many of the most important issues that hold up any real reform in immigration.

Women filmmakers in the spotlight at MicroCinema

BIG BEND - Films by women filmmakers will be highlighted at the annual MicroCinema, scheduled March 20-22 at Sul Ross State University. The Sul Ross Theatre Department event celebrates Women's History Month, and screenings will begin nightly at 7 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, Francois Fine Arts Building. Post-screening panels will follow each evening of screenings.

Observatory's 75th highlighted in new photo contest here

FORT DAVIS - Photographers get your camera ready. The Gallery at the Fort Davis Drug Store and the Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a photography contest in celebration of the McDonald Observatory's 75th Anniversary. " Celebrate75" is a juried contest open to all ages and the photos do not have to been taken recently but they must be related to the McDonald Observatory.

Personnel losses follow programs out in Fort Davis

FORT DAVIS - First it was a number of programs and sports that were cut and this week school trustees began accepting resignations and retirements from personnel. Seven of the Fort Davis school district's employees either resigned or retired Monday night when school trustees met in regular session. Both the cuts in programs and in personnel are results of financial issues facing the school district, which like all districts in the state has seen a steady decline in state funding over the past six years.

Granado wins nomination for Jeff Davis County judge

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - In the only contested race in Jeff Davis County, Justice of the Peace Fred Granado was the choice of Democratic primary voters 340 votes to 175 for Rick Herrman. Granado, who has served the county as justice of the peace for a dozen years, won in all five voting precincts both in early voting and on election day Tuesday. He now faces Republican nominee Jeannette Duer, who ran unopposed in the primary and received 203 votes Tuesday.

New park study demonstrates value of fort, Big Bend

BIG BEND - A new National Park Service report shows that over 330,000 visitors to the two NPS units in the Big Bend area in 2012 spent more than $26 million in communities near the parks. That spending supported 350 jobs in the local area. "National parks are proud to welcome visitors from across the country and around the world," said Big Bend National Park Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones. "We are delighted to share the story of this place and the experiences it provides and to use the park as a way to introduce our visitors to this part of the country and all that it offers."

Food pantry receives grant funds

FORT DAVIS - The Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County has received two Directors’ Choice Awards of $2,500 each from the Fasken Foundation supporting general operations and programs. The Directors’ Choice Award provides individual foundation trustees to direct undesignated funds to a cause they believe has merit and the organizational strength and sustainability to meet its mission successfully.

Elementary kids top 1500 miles run so far with 90 days to go

FORT DAVIS - Dirks-Anderson Elementary students have run more than 1,500 miles this year! On most Thursdays, students run during their physical education/health class. They begin by stretching and then hit the 1/10 of a mile track out on the playground.
