70th Big Bend Livestock Show starts tonight

BIG BEND - For the 70th consecutive year, the Big Bend Livestock Show will take centerstage in all three Big Bend counties - Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio. Weigh-in of animals will be from 4 to 6 p.m., today at the Alpine High School FFA ag barn. The show starts at 6 p.m. with the chicken show inside the ag facilities. Then on Friday at 9 a.m. both lambs and goats will be shown. Judge for both the lambs and goats will be Parks Tucker of San Angelo. All show activities are at the Alpine FFA facilities just west of Alpine Middle School.

Fort Davis Indian band members Brandon Trevizo, Tierney Foster, Hannah Kirkpatrick and Max Lannom were named All Region Band Dec. 14 and compete Saturday in Lubbock for All Area.

Border Patrol rescues injured man

PRESIDIO - Border Patrol agents from the Big Bend Sector, along with an EMT from Presidio, spent the night on a mountain top last Friday night and Saturday morning with a all of the banks branches, and then comparing the rates. As expected, drone sites selected including Corpus Christi location

BIG BEND - As expected the Federal Aviation Administration announced this week the selection of the six public entities - including the one in Far West Texas - that will develop unmanned aircraft systems (UAS or drone) research and test sites around the country. These congressionally-mandated test sites will conduct research into the certification and operational requirements necessary to safely integrate UAS into the national airspace over the next several years. The FAA press release states that UAS perform border and port surveillance, help with scientific research and environmental monitoring, support public safety by law enforcement agencies, help state universities conduct research, and support various other missions for government entities.

Sul Ross presents degrees to 216 students, 131 of those at Alpine campus

BIG BEND - A total of 216 students, 131 from the Alpine Campus and 85 from Rio Grande College, were candidates for degrees during fall commencement exercises at Sul Ross State University. Ceremonies were Dec. 14 in the Pete P. Gallego Center for Sul Ross-Alpine graduates and in the Uvalde High School Auditorium for RGC graduates.

Marfa's municipal airport gets big chunk of change

PRESIDIO COUNTY - The airport in Marfa got a major infusion of state funds this week when a state office approved funding for the site.
• Approximately $425,000 for Marfa Municipal Airport was approved by the Texas Transportation Commission at its December meeting.
• The funds will be used for planned airport improvements, which include:
•Engineering/design for pavement and lighting improvements
• A project consultant will be selected this winter.

Elementary, junior high dominate UIL academic meet

FORT DAVIS - Both the Fort Davis elementary students and their counterparts in junior high ran away with the team titles at the annual fall UIL academic meets. Teachers and administrators were pleased with the work of the students, who competed this week in a wide variety of academic subjects. Following are the school district totals for both the elementary meet and the junior high meet and after that the winners of first the elementary meet and then the winners of the junior high meet.

Life-sized bronze of Lawrence Sul Ross to be installed on campus in spring

BIG BEND - A life-size sculpture of Sul Ross State University's namesake may be completed and installed on campus within the next few months. A bronze sculpture of Lawrence Sullivan Ross, by noted sculptor Paul Tadlock of New Braunfels will depict the former Texas governor and President of Texas A&M as he appeared in his later years as a statesman and educator. The sculpture will stand slightly over six feet tall and will be located near Lawrence Hall. Tadlock earlier created a bronze likeness of a Lobo wolf, used as a fund-raiser by the Sul Ross Alumni Association.
