Academic competition Friday

Elementary, junior high students head for big VIL literary meet in Balmorhea

BALMORHEA - Fort Davis elementary and junior high students will be in Balmorhea Friday for the big annual UIL literary meet. Balmorhea has hosted the meet for a number of years with schools from as far away as Dell City, Sierra Blanca, Terlingua and Sanderson competing with the school districts closer to Bahnorhea.

Jeff Davis County Liveslock Show moved lo 2 pm on Sunday

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - With a cold and wet forecast blowing into Texas and the mountains later this week, officials of the Jeff Davis County Livestock Show Association decided to move the show from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.

No new candidates added to ballot for 2016 county and district offices

FORT DAVIS - The second week of the filing season slowed down things after the busy first few days when numerous candidates filed for office in the 2016 election cycle. The primaries for the two major parties are March 1 with the general election not until November of 20 16.

Eight-year construction work plan continues

In 2016, the Association of Oklahoma General Contractors and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation are preparing to continue forward with the Eight-Year Construction Work Plan designed to improve state and U.S. highways, interstates, roads, and bridges amid state funding uncertainty. The goal for these organizations and contractors is to bring elected officials and state leaders together to keep repairing and strengthening Oklahoma’s infrastructure.

4-H Officers meet...

Three State 4-H Officers traveled to Watonga to meet with Blaine County 4-H and 4-H Clover Bud members. The officers spoke with the 4-H members about opportunities that members have with their membership and led the group in various activities to develop their leadership capabilities. Members from the Okeene, Watonga and Geary 4-H groups met with President Steven Baringer, Vice-President Katie Seims and Secretary Haley Pryor.

Highway conditions improve in Oklahoma Panhandle after blowing snow

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has indicated US 287 is back open with lanes in Cimarron and Texas County in the Oklahoma panhandle. “North and southbound US-287 is now open in Cimarron County and roads are beginning to clear in both Cimarron and western Texas Counties. However, crews will continue to monitor and treat as needed as melted snow may refreeze creating slick spots. Drivers should use caution traveling in this area in the overnight as temperatures drop,” reported the department in a traffic advisory.

ANNIVERSARY ANNOUNCEMENT Celebrating 50th Wedding Anniversary

J.H. “Corky” and Dorothy Buser of Geary will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary Friday, November 20, 2015. They were married November 20, 1965, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. They have three sons! Tim and his wife Shanon of Geary, OK, Dennis and his wife Monica of Choctaw, OK, and David and his wife Missy of Geary, OK. The proud couple also have six grandchildren: Skylar, Zyler and L.J. Buser, Brandon Buser, Dalton and Karington Buser, and two step-grandchildren: Cory Williamson, and Jake Hill.
