Wreaths, Christmas candy suckers, a Nativity scene - Jim Allen, the director of grounds and maintenance for Jeff Davis County doesn't miss a lick in putting together a festive Jeff Davis County Courthouse lawn - many of the items handmade by Allen in his spare time away from work. At night, the courthouse is particularly a must see for local folks and those just passing through.

Fort Davis grad and vet in a coma in Hawaii

BARSTOW - A West Texas family, formerly from Jeff Davis County, is seeking help as their son, a Fort Davis High School graduate who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan, remains in a coma thousands of miles away. Pablo Reyes Jr. has been in a coma for the past week in Hawaii. Doctors are asking his parents to fly there, but they can't afford to make the trip. "It's very hard because he's so far, it's hard," said Cecilia Reyes, mother of the 1994 graduate of FDHS.

Frontier Christmas kicks off holiday season

FORT DAVIS -- The Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce announces its official kick-off to the holidays with "Frontier Christmas", a celebration of the season with a western twist. The Mile-High town will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland Dec. 6 -7 with activities throughout the Davis Mountains including the immensely popular "Christmas Tree Hunt" at the Nature Conservancy's Davis Mountains Preserve where visitors can choose and cut down their own Christmas tree.

Jeff Davis County Livestock Show starts at 10 on Saturday

FORT DAVIS - The annual Jeff Davis County Livestock Show will start at 10 a.m., Saturday at Sunrise Stables outside Fort Davis on the highway to McDonald Observatory. Both Fort Davis FFA and Jeff Davis County 4-H students will exhibit steers, lambs, goats and pigs at the show. Weigh-in for all four species will begin at 9 a.m. inside the arena. Judges will be two of the judges who were here last year - former Martin County Agent and Grady FFA instructor Gary Earhart, who is retired now and farms in Glasscock, Midland and Martin counties.

The log home was destroyed by fire early Tuesday

The log home of the Knecht family just north of Fort Davis was destroyed by fire early Tuesday. Son Josh Stracener was able to wake up his mother, Mrs. T.C. Knecht, and get her out of the house before it went up in flames, possibly from issues in the chimney. The family lost everything. Fort Davis volunteer firefighters fought this blaze and a grassfire later in the day Tuesday.
