AEP responds with crews from across state but ice wins first few rounds

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY and BIG BEND - Winter storms from both the north and the west - one bitter cold and the other sopping wet - converged on Texas this past weekend, slamming Jeff Davis County and much of West Texas with power outages, closed roads, churches and schools. No serious injuries have been reported. Heavy layers of ice covered everything across the entire Big Bend starting on Friday. Earlier, on Thursday, the temperature had climbed to the mid-70s in advance of the artic front - known in Texas as a blue norther.

Good news: TEA approves accountability appeal Bad news: school tax rate hike fails by two votes

FORT DAVIS - The outcome remains the same - the tax rate for Fort Davis schools will remain at $1.04 following the counting of provisional ballots that kept the election still in doubt late last week. Of those six ballots, three were thrown out as being invalid, and the other three counted - two against the proposal and one for. That means the measure to raise taxes to $1.17 failed 199 to 197. School trustees met Monday and briefly discussed what actions might come next - by law, the school district cannot ask for a recount. Only residents in the school district can make that request.
