Fort, Big Bend park closed due to government shutdown

BIG BEND - Both Fort Davis National Historic site and Bend National Park are closed due to the government shutdown. A spokesperson at BBNP said despite the government shutdown, emergency services are still available.
According to BBNP, 99 percent of the park’s visitors are gone as of Tuesday, while the very few remaining have 48 hours to make arrangements and leave. The main park entrance is closed, but law enforcement Park Rangers will continue to patrol. The only fully-paved road which traverses South Brewster County runs through the park.

Mules and donkeys are center of attention here this weekend

The object of this weekend's Mule and Donkey Daze gets a little snack from a friend.
FORT DAVIS - Mules and donkeys are at centerstage this weekend when the events are scheduled similar to the donkey races that created some fun last year in October. Dubbed Mule and Donkey Daze, the weekend will include everything from a mechanical bull to a giant slide for kids to a mule rodeo to a dance featuring a band called the Muleskinners.

Charge of the Rough riders highlights opening this week of Remington exhibit

BIG BEND - Treasures from the Frederic Remington Art Museum, including the rarely toured painting, The Charge of the Rough Riders, opens today, part of a gala weekend. The historic exhibit will be open to the public from this Saturday through Dec. 8 at the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University. Opening events will include scholarly presentations, dinners, receptions and live and silent auctions at various locations, including the museum; Sul Ross; Fort Davis National Historic Site in Fort Davis, the Gage Hotel, in Marathon and The Holland Hotel in Alpine.

Fort Davis High School Homecoming 2013

FORT DAVIS - With Madisen Chambers dominating at the net and Kylie Glidewell and Jessica Turner playing great defense in the back row, the Fort Davis Indians unloaded on a pair of Class A rivals Tuesday, thumping both in just three games each. The two winning matches brings the Indian season record to 21-12 going into district play this next week at Balmorhea.
