BIG BEND - Have you ever wondered what people ate who lived in this area before grocery stores? Sure, they hunted and grew some of their food, but they were also wise to the free food provided by the native plants.

El Paso artist Tom Lea is focus of museum opening

BIG BEND - "Tom Lea: A Retrospective," featuring the works of the late El Paso artist, will open Saturday, Sep. 19 at the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University. Over 20 original works of art from the El Paso Museum of Art will be on display. Though largely unknown outside of El Paso, Lea (1907-2001), knew where he belonged.

First of two felony trials begins here with big jury call

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - About 400 Jeff Davis County residents were called to the courthouse in Fort Davis Tuesday for one of the largest jury calls in recent years. Two cases are on the docket, both involving men with long ties to the county - and persons involved with the state court believed finding jurors might be difficult since both men are known in Fort Davis and in the case of one, Valentine as well.

Marfa Lights Festival includes Live Arts events

Get the popcorn ready and join Marfa Live Arts for two events celebrating the life and work of director Robert Altman in conjunction with the 2015 Marfa Lights Festival. On Sep. 6 at 6 pm, Marfa Live Arts will host a reception, talk and book signing co-presented with Marfa Book Company. The event will feature personal stories about the work and life of Robert Altman during a lively panel discussion with Altman's School numbers show an upward trend all across the Big Bend widow Kathryn Reed Altman, Altman's son Stephan Altman, and Marfa-based filmmaker and producer Carolyn Pfeiffer.

More changes soon to trash handling, recycling in county

Some major changes are coming to Jeff Davis County in coming months, as new ways to deal with trash and recycling continue to be studied. In recent weeks Texas Disposal Systems has told the county it will be increasing the fees it charges for hauling off the recycling compactor waste when it is full.

A Dallas-area family with West Texas roots (her high school coach was Jean Everett of Fort Davis and then of Fort Stockton) has taken over ownership of the Fort Davis Drug Store and Old Texan Inn.

It could have been pineapple cilantro chicken in Belize

FORT DAVIS - They thought about Belize. And they considered both Puerto Rico and Florida. Mexico and Connecticut were on the list, too. In the end, though, the Ortega bunch chose Fort Davis - and they are thrilled they did. And once folks around here try the pineapple cilantro chicken or the smothered salsa pork chops - or any number of other seafood and different items that will be on the new menu, the Ortegas are convinced the Fort Davis Drug Store will once again be right where it's always been - in the heart of Fort Davis.

County offers hearing Friday for public input on budget for 2016

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - The first of two public hearings to discuss the budget for Jeff Davis County is Friday at 1:30 pm, and a number of items on that budget are getting a closer look. Both the future of recycling in Jeff Davis County and the need for a fee schedule at both the landfill and for use of the pavilion behind the county library have been discussed in recent weeks.
