Kinzie memorial Aug. 14 in Alpine

FORT DAVIS and ALPINE - Memorial services for Roger Kinzie, 61 of Fort Davis, will be at 7 pm, Aug. 14 at Marshall Auditorium on the Sul Ross State University campus. Kinzie, well known throughout West Texas for his active participation in high school and college athletics where he volunteered his time as a football and volleyball officials, died July 9 in a Lubbock hospital after he was attacked by a swarm of bees near Marathon.

Memorial service planned for Marcha Louise Cox, 66

DES MOINES, IA and FORT DAVIS – Marcha Louise Cox, 66 of Fort Davis, died unexpectedly Aug. 1, 2015,at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines,  Iowa. A memorial service will be at alater date in Fort Davis.  She was born May 11, 1949, in Lorimer, Iowa, to Dillard and Lois (Stein) Paxton. In 1968, Ron Cox became a single parent of four children. Ron and Marcha met on a blind date and later married in 1969. Marcha helped raise Ron's children as her own and they later had two children of their own. She worked for many years as an insuranceconsultant for Neodyme in the medical insurance department. After retiring, Marcha helped Ron with his broommaking business   .

Florence Forchheimer Halpern

ALPINE - Florence Forchheimer Halpern, a member of a pioneer merchantfamily from Alpine, passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of July 10, 2015, at her home in Alpine. She was 95.  Flo was born Nov. 10, 1919, in New York City, the youngest child of Louis  and Mathilda Winkler Forchheimer, members of the Jewish faith who immigratedfrom Germany before the Holocaust.  he family, including Flo's sister Juliette and brother Paul, moved to Alpine in the early 1920s to work in the Winkler family business, a department and clothing store on Holland Avenue across from the train depot. Louie would soon acquire the business, and it became Forchheimer's Department Store, family owned and operated by the Halperns and Forchheimers until 1976. Flo was raised in Alpine and graduated fromAlpine High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, with a major in English and a Spanish minor. Mel La Follette

FAR WEST TEXAS - The Rev. Melvin Walker La Follette was born In Evansville, Indiana, on September 7,1930. He lived all of childhood in  Ridgeville, Indiana. His father, MelvinLester La Follette, was an electrician for the local telephone company who lost his job during the Great Depression. B e -  cause of this, his mother , Genevieve Farr La follete , found employment as the first grade teacher at the Grant County Elementary School. For many years, her guidance shaped young Melvin. After graduating high school in 1948, he then served his summers inthe U.S. Forestry Service. He became frustrated with his mother when she refused to grant him permission to join an elite band of men known as the smoke jumpers. He had to compromise with her and remain part of the ground crew. He assisted in the Mann Gulch Montana fire of 1948 where 13 smoke jumpers suffered a terrible tragedy. He reconciled with mother shortly after that event.

Memorial services Saturday for Hack

FORT DAVIS - Services in Fort Davis for Bill Hack will be at 11am, Saturday at the Fort Davis United Methodist Church with a potluck luncheon to follow the service. He died June 4 on a trip to Wisconsin and Illinois, where he had grown up and worked before moving to Fort Davis a couple decades ago. He and his wife Alice have been active in the Methodist church here for many years. All members of the community are invited to attend both the services  and the luncheon.

Kinzie memorial services on Friday

FORT DAVIS and ALPINE - A memorial service to honor the memory and life of Danita Dawn Kinzie will be this Friday, June 19, at Grace Christian Fellowship, 801 East Brown Street in Alpine. Services will begin at 6:30 p.m. All friends, colleagues, classmates  and acquaintances are invitedand welcomed. She died May 9 at the age of 38 at her home in Alpine. She and her two sons had lived in Fort Davis and/or Alpine for many years.
