Fort Davis Indians got together this summer

A group of Fort Davis Indians got together this summer to play a little roundball and compete in games with teams from Del Rio, Pecos, Uvalde and Alpine under volunteer coaches Sandra Chambers and Lashawn McIvor. The Coolest 5K Run that kicked off activities for the Fourth of July celebration

FORT DAVIS - Over 190 runners - the biggest field ever - competed Friday in the Coolest 5K Run that kicked off activities for the Fourth of July celebration in Fort Davis. The runners came from all over the nation with Tristan Savins of Midlothian the top runner overall and the winner of the men's division. Paige Kinucan, formerly of Alpine and now of Albuquerque, NM, won the womens division.

Baseball camp planned July 25-27 at Sul Ross

BIG BEND - Sul Ross State University will conduct a baseball camp at the end of this month. The Lobos will host the camp at Kokernot Field, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 25 - 27. Instruction will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. each day. SRSU Coach Bobby Mesker will direct the camp and will be aided by Assistant Coach Matt Lynn, former SRSU outfielder Nolan Hoskins and current first baseman Eli Gallego.

Lobos lose top women's roundball coach to Tarleton

BIG BEND - Sul Ross State University women’s basketball Coach Chris Marks has resigned. Marks has accepted a position as an assistant coach at Tarleton State University, an NCAA Division II university in the Lone Star Conference.

Lobo inks contract with New York Mets

ALPINE – A member of Sul Ross State University’s baseball team has signed a professional baseball contract. Sophomore right-hander Derrick Bernard (Texas City, TX/Texas City HS/Blinn College) has signed to play with the New York Mets. Bernard will report to the Mets’ Rookie League team at Port St. Lucie in the Gulf Coast League.

Pair of Lobos from Lubbock are all regional

BIG BEND - Two members of the Sul Ross State University baseball team have earned baseball.com postseason honors. Junior shortstop Josh Vasquez (Lubbock, TX/Frenship HS) was named second team All-West Region, and junior outfielder Turner Mattson (Lubbock, TX/Monterey HS/Howard JC) was named third team All-West Region.

Six from Sul Ross selected as Distinguished Scholar/Athletes

RICHARDSON - Six student-athletes from Sul Ross State University have been named American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athletes for the 2014 winter/spring semesters in their respective sports. They were among 84 student-athletes honored after a vote of the league's sports information directors. One student-athlete per school in each sport was eligible to be honored.

The 20th - and final - year of the Jim Tre Espy Scholarship Golf Tournament at Alpine Country Club was played this spring. Shown are his nieces and nephews at the plaque dedicated to his memory which was erected in 1996.

Sports medicine clinic starts on Friday

FORT DAVIS - For the 28th consecutive year, the Davis Mountains Sports Medicine Clinic will be offered at Prude Ranch, starting June 6 and going through June 8. Registration is Friday, June 6 at 3:30 p.m., with clinics Friday evening until noon Sunday. Speakers include Dr. Robert Bell of El Paso, Ken Fox of Lubbock, Dr. Bud Curtis of San Antonio, Dr. David Mansfield of El Paso, Dr. Toby Natividad of El Paso, Ben Drake, the athletic trainer at Dallas-schools.

Sul Ross athletes double up with academic honors

RICHARDSON - Eighteen student-athletes from Sul Ross State University have earned winter and spring American Southwest Conference academic honors. Eight Lobo teams were represented as the ASC announced their 2013-14 Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. Six members of the SRSU softball team were honored. Four members of the baseball team were named, while three women’s tennis players, two members of the men’s basketball team, and one student-athlete each from women’s basketball, men’s tennis, men’s track and field and women’s track and field were honored. One student-athlete, junior Kaitlyn Moody (Eula, TX/Eula HS), was honored in two sports-women’s basketball and women’s tennis.
