Alpine golfer leads team to sixth in nation

MIDLAND - Ryder Skillern, an Alpine graduate who is a sophomore at Midland College, is one of the top players for the MC golf team that finished sixth in the nation last week at the National Junior College Association's mens golf championships. Skillern and David Wicks, a freshman from East Sussex, England, have been MC's top golfers this year.

Pronghorn seminar draws 130 from all over continent

BIG BEND – They came from Canada, Mexico and across the US last week to Sul Ross State University's Borderlands Research Institute, hosted by SRSU and and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The 26th meeting of the pronghorn an hosted the 26th Biennial Pronghorn Antelope meeting, this year titled Managing Pronghorn on Private Land. About 130 participants -- the second largest group in the workshop's history -- attended.

Espy, who lives in Midland now, and Wilson were one of over 400 teams to compete in the huge roping held in conjunction with the Fourth Annual Chicken Fried Steak Festival.

Over 300 attended amateur boxing matches

Over 300 attended amateur boxing matches between El Paso and Alpine youngsters Saturday during Cinco de Mayo activities in Fort Davis. Sponsored by the Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce, the matches were on the stage behind the old Union Mercantile, now the county library.

Junior high boys win district crown

SANDERSON - Fort Davis wrapped up the athletic season with the junior high tennis tournament this past week in Sanderson. The Indian boys won the district team crown with 40 total points. Mav McIvor was the district champ in boys singles, while the team of Troy Hernandez and Efren Ponce took second place in boys doubles.

Menard duo makes it four in a row

COLLEGE STATION - After knocking out their first round opponent from Kopperl, the Fort Davis mixed doubles team of Hadley McIvor and Quentin Mathes ran into the threetime (and now four-time) state champions from Menard. McIvor, a freshman, and Mathes, a senior, began playing as a team this spring.
