Indians advance to Region I track meet

LEVELLAND - A group of Fort Davis Indians will be going to Levelland next week for the Region I track and field meet. Athletes headed to the meet are Tessa Schreiber, Hadley McIvor, Yani Ponce, Emily Merrill, Cali Porter, Joseline Hernandez, Cesar Chavez, Javier Lara, Erick Morales, Lalito Hernandez, Vincent Sanchez, Rafael Reigel and Julian Lara.

Sul Ross baseball player Dustan Greer (19) mimics Babe Ruth's "called shot" at the 1932 World Series in the presence of the Bambino's last car. The 1948 Lincoln Continental, now owned by former Alpine resident Lonnie Shelton of Pampa, made a stop at Kokernot Field during last weekend's American Southwest Conference baseball series between the Lobos and Hardin-Simmons. Shelton now takes the car to various baseball venues, discussing aspects of Ruth's life and auctioning rides to the highest bidders, with all proceeds going to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Mathes, McIvor and Chambers head to regional

FORT DAVIS - Senior Quentin Mathes, junior Madisen Chambers and freshman Hadley McIvor will be in Levelland next week for the Region I tennis championships - the winners advancing to the state Class A tennis tournament in Austin later this spring. Mathes and McIvor teamed up for Fort Davis to win the mixed doubles crown at the District 8 tennis championships this past weekend, while Chambers was runnerup in girls singles.

Granado, Hernandez lead Indians at junior high district track and field

FORT DAVIS - Troy Hernandez and Amber Granado led the Fort Davis Junior High Indians at the 2014 district championships. Hernandez won the pole vault and took second place in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. He also ran a leg in the second place 4X200 relay along with Jake Guthrie, Penn Merrill and Mav McIvor.

Chambers/Mathes team wins final tuneup

SANDERSON - With just a week to go before the district tennis meet, the Fort Davis duo of senior Quentin Mathes and junior Madisen Chambers won the Sanderson Invitational Meet this past week over teams from much larger schools. With teams from Del Rio, Fabens and Fort Hancock in the mix, the Indian mixed doubles team beat all three teams - one from Class AA Fort Hancock and the other two from Class AAAA Fabens to win the championship.

Indians preparing for district track meet at Rankin's Red Devil Relays

RANKIN - Yani Ponce led the Fort Davis Indians with a second place in the 300 meters hurdles as well as a fourth place finish in the triple jump and fifth in the pole vault. The Indians were in their final warmup before the district track and field meet later this month.

Garnsey's high jump win leads Pirates at Wink's Wildcat Relays; district next

WINK - In boys track and field action last week Valentine finished in ninth place, ahead of 10th place Fort Davis and 11th place Marfa at the Wink Wildcat Relays. There were a dozen teams in the field with Iraan overwhelming every other team with 171 total points. The next nearest school was 100 points behind. Valentine got points from junior Latham Garnsey who won the high jump six inches over his nearest competitor. He also took fourth in the 400 meters. Daniel Koch of the Pirates was third in the 3200 meters and fifth in the 1600 meters.
