Pot sweetened for winners of Coolest 5K scheduled to be run here at 8:30 am,July 5

FORT DAVIS – The Coolest 5k In Texas and 1k fun run/walk will take place July 5 in Fort Davis. This is in conjunction with Fort Davis' premier event of the year, celebrating a good old fashioned Independence Day. The 5k, which starts at 8:30 a.m. in the Jeff Davis County Park will have nine age divisions with an engraved mug going to the top three in each division.

Seven Sul Ross Lobos selected all conference in baseball

Seven members of Sul Ross State University’s baseball team have been honored by the American Southwest Conference. Senior shortstop Josh Vasquez from Wolfforth Frenship High School tied for first team All-Conference honors at shortstop. Senior second baseman Shane Sawyer of Midland High School and Odessa College, junior first baseman Eli Gallego of Alpine and Cisco Ju nior College and junior outfielder Kitt Henderson from Lubbock Monterey earned second team All-ASC honors.

Jimenez signs with UTPB to play tennis

Mickey Jimenez, a 2015 Midland High School graduate, has signed a letter of intent to play tennis at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She is the daughter of Frank and Abilgail Jimenez of Midland and the granddaughter of Juan and Lupe Dominguez of Fort Davis. Jimenez on why she chose UTPB: “I was very interested in becoming a teacher, and they had an amazing teachers program. And I want to continue playing tennis. Luckily they offered me a spot.

Lobo football ends spring practices

For the second time in as many seasons, Sul Ross State University’s football team conducted spring practice under the present coaching staff. And with the benefit of a year’s experience, this year’s practices should yield dividends this fall. “The transition was a lot easier this year,” said SRSU Coach John Pearce. “The players knew what we expected on the field, and I think we made great strides from last year.”

Chicks with Sticks taking their act to San Angelo

Eight Fort Davis Indians will be in San Angelo Friday and Saturday for the Region II track meet. All freshmen and sophomores, the Indians, competing in three relays, are (bottom) Jama Williamson, Conchita Mendoza, Yani Ponce and Amber Granado; (top) Tessa Schreiber, Allison Rubio, Becky Caswell and Hadley McIvor. Four of the Indians also compete in individual events.

Desert bighorns focus of seminar presentations

BIG BEND - A contingent of graduate students with the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University, along with advisor and BRI director Dr. Louis Harveson, recently attended the 2015 Desert Bighorn Council Meeting in Borrego Spring, CA. Students Thomas Janke of Granger; Josh Cross and Carlos "Lalo" Gonzalez-Gonzalez, both of Alpine, each made a presentation of their thesis research. Janke presented "International Cooperation Vital to Bighorn Restoration"; Cross discussed "Movements of Desert Bighorns
Translocated to the Santiago Mountains"; and Gonzalez presented "Survival Assessment of Desert Bighorn Translocations in Texas."
