Sul Ross hires a basketball coach for 2015-16

BIG BEND - Clif Carroll has been named men’s basketball coach at Sul Ross State University. Carroll, 33, who spent the last two seasons in the same capacity at McMurry University in Abilene, replaces Greg Wright, who resigned earlier this year after nine seasons with the Lobos. Carroll will also serve as a lecturer in physical education.

Indian girls advance to regional track and field meet

WINK - Eight Fort Davis Indian girls advance to the Region II track meet May 1-2 at Angelo State University in San Angelo. The girls placed in all three relay events - an accomplishment considering the Indians seldom get to practice relays because of the lack of a track in Fort Davis.

As many as 16 bouts could be on the card for May 2 with the second Big Bend Brawl returns to Fort Davis Behind The Union at the Tyrone and Audrey Kelly Outdoor Theatre.

Tyler Card is newest Sul Ross Lobo coach

ALPINE -Tyler Card, who has playing and coaching experience in different areas of the country, is Sul Ross State University’s new offensive line coach. Card, a native of Salt Lake City, UT, joins the Lobos after coaching at  Pace University, an NCAA Division II  university in Pleasantville, NY, last fall. Card played center and wrestled at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. He served as a team captain in both sports, and placed fifth in the state in wrestling as a senior

INDIAN OF THE WEEK

Whitesell was the only Fort Davis golfer to make it to regionals - an accomplishment since golf, like tennis,  baseball and a few other activities, have been dropped here due to budget restraints. He didn't get a whole lot of practice and he's not advancing on to state, but, hey, he was in San Angelo this week playing golf - and the rest of us were not!

McIvor/Chambers team wins Sanderson tennis tournament

SANDERSON - The Fort Davis girls doubles team won first place and the boys doubles team took the consolation crown last week at the Sanderson Tennis Tournament. Tennis is no longer a schoolsponsored sport due to cuts in state education funding, but the Indians are competing thanks to volunteer coaches and supporters.

Indians dominate district tennis tournament here

The Fort Davis Indians could send as many as a dozen players to the regional tennis tournament following district play Wednesday in Fort Davis. With action still ongoing at presstime, a number of events were decided and more Indians  could be in the mix for a trip to Region II championships in San Angelo later this month.

Garnsey captures roundball kudos, on track for state

VALENTINE - Latham Garnsey, the Defensive MVP from basketball District 9A, was recently named to the 6-Man Coaches Association Second Team All- Region Team. Only one other player from the district was named to the team - Dell City's Jacob Hickox.

Big Marfa junior high squad dominates Van Horn track meet

VAN HORN - Despite being shorthanded, the Fort Davis Indians scored 80 points in the boys division and 50 in the girls division at the Van Horn Junior High Relays last weekend. Marfa dominated both the boys and girls divisions, winning the boys team crown with a convincing 182 points to 97 for Van Horn and 80 for Fort Davis.

Indians out-duel Bears to win 12 of 14 tennis matches

FORT DAVIS - In the first home meet of the year, Fort Davis netters bested Balmorhea's teams in 12 of 14 matches played.
