Dorris services will be at Fort Davis church

BALMORHEA - Tyrrel Anne Hughes Dorris, 66 of Balmorhea, died March 23, 2015, at Pecos County Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton after a lengthy illness. She was born in Marfa on Aug. 5, 1948, to Edwin and Mary Lou Hughes, and was the granddaughter of Tyrrel and Edna Smith, who ranched in Presidio and Jeff Davis counties. She started school in the tiny Marfa school and moved to San Bernardino, Cal., at the beginning of the population boom, when there were still orange groves around the neighborhoods and new scho ols were filled to bursting. When her mother died, Tyrrel and her sisters came back to live with her grandparents and aunt, Doris Smith. She graduated from Marfa High School in 1966. She attended Angelo State University in San Angelo and Sul Ross State University in Alpine, where she met the love of her life, Michael Perry Dorris from pioneering Alpine families. They were married on March 17, 1970, at her grandparents' ranch north of Marfa. She saw both coasts and Hawaii while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. His other careers took them to Oklahoma, New Hampshire, and back to Texas where they finally moved to Balmorhea and where they were living at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband, Mike Dorris of Balmorhea; a son, Steven Michael Dorris; two sisters, Marjorie and Marion Hughes, both of Marfa; two nieces, Ty and Marylou Patterson; a great-grandnephew Jon Martin and greatniece Georgie Martin. She enjoyed meeting people and giving a hand when she could. Stray cats knew where she lived and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Services are tentatively scheduled 2 pm Saturday, April 11 at the Fort Davis Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to the Bloys Campmeeting Association.
