Switchin' Flies

Some "smart" person recently published an article in The New Republic called "The Progressive Case for Teaching Shakespeare." I expected thunder and lightning! Instead . . . crickets. It seems that a California high school teacher wanted to drop the Bard to make room for "more exciting" stuff that "better speaks to the needs of my very ethnically diverse and wonderfully curious moderndaystudents." The only defense for Shakespeare that the NR author could drum up was that we need to teach his  tuff to make sure today's students could see how differently people used to live and how much our language has changed. What?
