Switchin' Flies

By Barney Nelson

Limpia was running muddy and foamy as I took a drive to Pecos a couple of weeks ago. Tanks full. Nice breeze ruffling the leaves. All was right with the world. Well, except for whitebrush blooming everywhere. Whitebrush is pure evil except that it blooms after a good rain, smells divine, and makes bees happy. But it has totally invaded our mountains, forming a solid mass in places or filling every niche between boulders. Its white blossoms make the invasion obvious. It probably also increases our bee population, again both good and bad. Since we've had a good year, it is hard to tell where the fires burned as the scars have healed beautifully. Has whitebrush disappeared where the fires went through? I'm not sure.
