Jamaica is 150 miles long and 50 miles wide. It is just 90 miles south of Cuba. Early people in Jamaica lived in what was called “the Land of Springs.” It was once owned by Spain and called Santiago. In the mid-1600s it became under the rule of England and was named Jamaica. In 1962 it achieved full independence from England. With a population of 2.8 million, it is the third largest English-speaking country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. The musical genre reggae originated on the island.
